The Old Maltings is situated in the centre of the market town of Swaffham, Norfolk. The building was converted in 2000 into twenty four self contained one bedroom flats. All four ground floor properties are fully adapted for wheelchairs.
The scheme is located within easy walking distance of the town centre. Swaffham has a wide diversity of small retail outlets as well as many national chain stores. It has both Doctor and Dental surgeries and retains the local community hospital. Amenities nearer the scheme include a public house, baker, butcher, general store and post office which are only a short walk away.
All external agencies such as GP’s, district nurses, chiropodists and opticians visit the scheme regularly along with many local community groups.
Within the scheme, each flat is carpeted throughout and has non-slip flooring in the kitchen and shower room. All flats have fully fitted kitchens where the sink can be lowered for wheelchair users. Emergency alarm pull cords are situated in every room as well as in all communal areas.
There are two assisted bathrooms with adapted bathing facilities for those who are less able, and also a hairdressing salon where appointments can be made with the visiting hairdresser.
The scheme has a communal lounge which is used for group activities including a book club, film shows, reminiscence group and much more. There are also smaller lounges throughout the building where small groups can meet, and enjoy the peace and quiet.
Within the scheme there is also a day centre that caters for the wider older population who live within a ten mile radius of the town. All customers are welcome to join in with the activities that are on offer. The centre operates Monday to Friday.
What's it like living in The Old Maltings
Mr P said ‘There is always something to do here. Since I moved into the scheme I am interested in my old hobbies again and all the staff have become like an extended family’
Many customers also comment on the ‘homely’ atmosphere within the scheme and the fact that they no longer have any worries in relation to heating and maintaining their own home. The fact that staff are available 24 hours a day gives them a real feeling of security and peace of mind which also applies to their families.
