Hundreds of people will descend on the Lake District for one of the UK’s toughest charity treks – and among them will be dozens of walkers from Norfolk.
The Cumbrian Challenge, run by the veterans’ charity Walking With The Wounded, takes place on Saturday, 17 May. It gives supporters the chance to tackle one of three mountainous routes, including a 28km course with over 1,700 metres of ascent – all to raise money for former armed forces personnel.
Joining the effort will be around 50 people from Norfolk-based heating company Gasway - part of housing provider Bromford Flagship - along with people from supporting partners who have helped to raise over £30,000 so far. Many are long-time supporters of the event, returning each year to push themselves physically while raising money for a cause close to their hearts.

Andy Merrill, Gasway’s head of group and electrical operations, has been involved in the event since 2016.Mr Merrill said: “It’s not easy, and that’s the point. We’re walking to show support, to raise money, and to let veterans know we haven’t forgotten them.”
The event holds a special meaning for many involved.
Mr Merrill said: “You meet people who’ve faced incredible challenges – PTSD, injury, homelessness – and they’re still putting one foot in front of the other. It’s humbling. If we can help by doing this, we will.”
Walking With The Wounded, which has a base in Stody, north Norfolk, supports ex-service personnel who are struggling with mental health, unemployment or housing. Its early intervention programmes help veterans find stability, regain purpose and rebuild their lives.
Gasway – the largest heating company in the east of England – is a proud sponsor of the event again this year.
