Gas Safety Week: why your annual gas safety check matters
Your annual gas safety check plays an important role in keeping you, your family, and your home safe.
As part of Gas Safety Week, we're recognising the important work our Heating Engineers and gas teams do every day to help keep customers safe in their homes.
One of the most important ways we can work together to keep your home safe is through your annual gas safety check.
If you have gas appliances in your home that we are responsible for, we're required to carry out a gas safety check every year. These checks help make sure appliances are working safely and identify any issues before they become more serious. Our gas safety standard states that annual safety inspections are carried out on all landlord-owned gas appliances in line with legal requirements.
Why are gas safety checks important?
Your annual gas safety check helps us make sure the gas appliances we're responsible for are working safely and efficiently. It also helps identify any potential faults, wear and tear, or safety concerns before they become bigger problems.
Gas appliances that aren't maintained properly can increase the risk of:
- gas leaks
- fires
- carbon monoxide poisoning
Our Heating Engineers are trained to spot potential issues and take action to help keep you safe.
Carbon monoxide: what you need to know
Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that you cannot see, smell or taste.
If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds:
· immediately open all doors and windows to ventilate the area
· turn off the gas emergency control valve at the meter, unless it's in a basement or cellar, or at the LPG tank/storage
· extinguish all flames and do not smoke
· avoid using electrical switches, as this can ignite gas
· contact the National Gas Emergency service at 0800 111 999
· follow the emergency operative's advice on any gas appliance issues. Contact us if repairs are needed
· if you feel unwell, seek medical attention immediately and mention possible carbon monoxide exposure
· do not turn the gas supply back on until a Gas Safe registered engineer has checked it
Please help us keep your home safe
When we contact you to arrange your annual gas safety check, please make every effort to keep the appointment. If the time isn't convenient, let us know and we'll work with you to arrange an alternative.
Allowing access for these checks helps us ensure your gas appliances remain safe and continue to meet the required safety standards. Annual inspections are a key part of keeping customers safe and are carried out on all landlord-owned gas appliances.
By allowing access for your appointment and reporting any concerns promptly, you can help us keep your home safe throughout the year.
